Grad student chit-chat

One of the things that came up today in a conversation between new grad students in the department was how little sleep we've gotten thus far in the semester on school nights. There's quite a difference between hours slept per school night by those with teaching assistanceships as opposed to those with fellowships, who (a) don't have teaching responsibilities, (b) aren't required to take an extra, semester-long methods class, and (c) have significantly fewer meetings that they must attend.

When the data from this small sample are averaged, TAs in my department are getting less than five hours a night. Fellows are getting around seven, and the range of their reported hours slept is much narrower.
