Harry Potter Happiness

A very happy birthday to both Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling! Potter fansite extraordinaire The Leaky Cauldron has put up a very nice piece of artwork to celebrate the occasion. The picture is explained here. Basically, in the chronology of the story, Harry was born in 1980 (he began attending Hogwarts in 1991) and therefore turns 26 today, so the picture is of a potential 26th birthday party.*

The artwork assumes that our hero is still among the living when the seventh book ends. It also assumes that many other characters survive, something that I think is wildly optimistic. On a related note, I want very much for Harry to survive, but I don't have my hopes up. Same for those friends. I think some will certainly make it through, but how could all of them? Harry and his friends are fighting evil. Specifically, they are fighting Voldemort, the most evil wizard of all time, in addition to Voldemort's followers, many of whom are almost as terrible as he.** There are going to be high casualties on the good side. To quote Sirius in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, "there are things worth dying for!" Harry understands this. So do his close friends, although it took some of them longer to realize this than others. They know who they're up against, and they're not going to turn back now or ever.

JKR turns 41 today, if you are wondering.

*Harry Potter is older than me!
**For example, Bellatrix Lestrange.
