Language geek moment

Late Monday night, when I was getting ready to go to sleep, a sentence I had written in a composition in French class earlier that day popped into my head, and I realized: Oops. I should have written that one verb in the dependent clause in the future tense, not the conditional.

Not the first time things like that have occured to me lately. It makes me wonder... Why am I having so many random thoughts about syntax, parts of speech, and the structure of language in my mental stream of consciousness these days? It feels very... I don't know... metalinguistic, maybe? Meta- something, at any rate. Also, why couldn't I have had that particular thought nine hours earlier?
